Job Description
Roles & Responsibilities
Due to our expansion, applications are invited from suitably qualified individuals who are passionate and forward thinking and who will thrive in the vibrant learning environment offered at Hartland. By being ambitious, not only for students but for yourself, you will help to maintain and build upon a successful programme of study in history and politics by sharing in the department s responsibility for teaching and learning, and pastoral care. The successful candidate will also be expected to make a contribution to our unique and strong enrichment programme which ensures that learning and opportunity are diverse for all.
History is taught throughout the school at Hartland by a dedicated team of four full-time teachers. In KS3, we follow a course based on the English National Curriculum, but one which uses materials adapted for the particular needs of our students that incorporate units connected to Dubai and UAE history, the history of Islam, as well as investigations into our students own home countries. In KS4, students study for the Edexcel IGCSE modular course, learning about the Cold War, Stalin s Russia, the Vietnam Conflict and China in the 20th century, with Paper 1 taken at the end of Year 10. In the Sixth Form, we offer AQA A-level, focusing on The Tudors and Weimar and Nazi Germany.
Politics is taught in the Sixth Form and is offered as the AQA A-level course. Students explore the UK and US systems of government and politics, developing a comparative understanding of how each operates. The course also includes a study of political ideologies and key thinkers, encouraging students to engage critically with ideas such as liberalism, socialism and conservatism, as well as learning to connect theory to current political issues.
The history and politics department prides itself on its excellent examination results at both IGCSE and A-level with a significant number of students achieving high grades across all examinations; for example, last year, 60% of candidates in Year 11 and 70% of our Year 10 modular candidates received a grade of 7 or above. We take great pride in the academic development of our students and anticipate similar success in the future. All history lessons are taught in subject-specific classrooms equipped with interactive whiteboards, that generally use Microsoft Teams as a mode of instruction. As a department, we believe in extending learning beyond the classroom and encourage active participation in school clubs and debating teams, trips and other extracurricular events, as well as many other activities that help to foster a deeper appreciation of historical inquiry among our students.
The successful candidate will:
- Hold a relevant degree and teaching qualification
- Have experience of teaching History in the UK or in an international setting. Experience having taught Politics would be advantageous but not essential.
- Must be able to teach to A-Level and GCSE level
- Have a minimum two years teaching experience
- Have exceptional communication skills
- Be committed to the Hartland Values that can be found on our website
