Job Description
Roles & Responsibilities
A Heavy Truck Driver operates large commercial vehicles, such as semi-trucks, tractor-trailers, or other heavy-duty trucks, to transport goods and materials over long distances or locally. Their role is critical in the logistics and transportation industry.
The Heavy Truck Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of goods and materials from one location to another. The driver must ensure the truck is in good working condition, follow traffic laws, and adhere to company policies while transporting goods over long or short distances.
Key Responsibilities:
Transport Goods:
Drive a heavy-duty truck or tractor-trailer over long or short distances, including local and interstate routes.
Deliver goods to customers or between distribution points in a timely manner.
Ensure proper loading and unloading of goods, either manually or with the help of equipment.
Vehicle Maintenance:
Conduct pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections of the truck and trailer to ensure they are in good working condition.
Perform minor repairs and ensure the vehicle is well-maintained to prevent delays.
Report any major mechanical issues to the maintenance team or fleet manager.
Compliance:
Follow all road safety and traffic laws (local, state, federal).
Comply with hours-of-service regulations, maintaining proper logs of driving hours, stops, and rest periods.
Ensure that all required paperwork, such as delivery receipts, inspection logs, and maintenance records, is accurately completed and submitted.
Customer Service:
Maintain positive and professional relationships with customers, ensuring goods are delivered safely and on time.
Address any concerns or issues the customer might have in a professional manner.
Safety and Reporting:
Ensure the safety of cargo, vehicle, and yourself while on the road.
Report accidents, incidents, and breakdowns immediately to the appropriate authority.
Follow company safety policies and participate in safety training programs as required.
Loading and Unloading:
Assist with loading and unloading the vehicle when needed.
Ensure that all cargo is properly secured to prevent damage during transport.
Route Planning: Plan and follow the most efficient and safe routes, adjusting for road conditions, weather, and traffic.
Use GPS or maps to navigate.
Desired Candidate Profile
Required Skills & Qualifications:
Licensing: Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with necessary endorsements.
Clean driving record with no major traffic violations.
Experience:
Previous experience driving heavy trucks (preferably over 2-3 years). Familiarity with safety and road laws.
Skills: Strong communication skills for interaction with clients, dispatchers, and other team members.
Good problem-solving skills to address mechanical or route issues.
