Job Description
Roles & Responsibilities
A Veterinary Nurse plays a crucial role in providing comprehensive healthcare to animals in a veterinary setting. They are responsible for supporting veterinarians in ensuring the well-being of animals, carrying out medical procedures, and implementing treatment plans. Veterinary Nurses often work closely with pets and their owners, providing educational support to ensure at-home care is conducted effectively. This role demands a deep compassion for animals, a good understanding of veterinary practices, and excellent communication skills to mediate between the veterinary team and pet owners. With a high degree of responsibility for the health and well-being of animals, this position requires both technical skills and emotional resilience.
Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians during surgeries and medical examinations in a clinical setting.
- Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by the supervising veterinarian.
- Perform laboratory tests, including bloodwork, urinalysis, and other diagnostic procedures.
- Monitor the recovery of animals post-surgery, ensuring utmost comfort and care are provided.
- Educate pet owners on preventive healthcare and post-treatment activities for their pets.
- Maintain accurate medical records for each animal patient under their care.
- Handle and restrain animals safely during treatments and examinations to prevent injuries.
- Ensure a clean and sanitary environment within the veterinary clinic or hospital.
- Prepare and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment in readiness for procedures.
- Administer vaccinations and conduct routine health checks as part of wellness programs.
- Provide emergency first aid and initial triage in acute cases before veterinarian intervention.
- Collaborate with other veterinary staff to develop effective patient care strategies.
Requirements
- A degree or diploma qualification in Veterinary Nursing or related field is essential.
- Proven experience working in a veterinary clinic, hospital, or similar environment preferred.
- Excellent understanding of animal anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology is required.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with both colleagues and pet owners effectively.
- Ability to handle physically demanding tasks and work in potentially stressful situations.
- Demonstrated experience with animal handling and restraint techniques safely and humanely.
- Must hold relevant certifications or licensure as required by local legislation.
