Job Description

As a Medical Coder, you will play a critical role in the healthcare industry. Your primary responsibility is to accurately translate medical diagnoses, procedures, and treatments into standardized codes. These codes are vital for ensuring proper billing, maintaining patient records, and facilitating smooth operations within healthcare facilities. Medical Coders are essential in making sure that healthcare providers are reimbursed timely by insurance companies for their services. They also assist in research and analysis and ensure compliance with federal regulations, thus ensuring the overall efficiency of healthcare business operations. This role demands a detail-oriented individual who has a strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.


Responsibilities
  • Analyze patient medical records and documents to determine the appropriate coding.
  • Translate medical diagnoses and procedures into specific universal medical codes.
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of coded data and information.
  • Verify codes against insurance guidelines to prevent rejections or denials.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and keep medical records secure at all times.
  • Conduct audits and verify that records are correctly coded for payment purposes.
  • Stay updated with the latest coding changes and healthcare laws and regulations.
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers to clarify information and resolve coding discrepancies.
  • Assist in training new coders and provide updates on coding practices and policies.
  • Prepare and present coding data for healthcare providers upon request.
  • Use specialized coding software to assist in the investigation and resolution of coding issues.
  • Contribute to the development of workplace policies to enhance coding efficiency.

Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED; certificate in medical coding is preferred.
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Associate (CCA) is required.
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology is essential.
  • Proven experience as a Medical Coder in a clinical or healthcare setting.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong analytical skills required.
  • Proficiency with coding software, especially within electronic health record systems.
  • Strong communication skills to interact with healthcare providers and colleagues.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time efficiently to meet deadlines.
  • Adaptability to changes in coding guidelines and healthcare regulations.
