Roles & Responsibilities

Opportunity Responsibilities
The Concertmaster will be the intermediary between the musicians and the conductor. They are responsible for dictating bowings to the first violin section; playing solo passages in the absence of a guest soloist; understanding the conductor's ideas and communicating them in technical terms to the rest of the orchestra; and leading the orchestra in tuning before rehearsals and performances. They will be responsible for setting a good example of musicianship, preparation and leadership, and will mentor their section, ensuring all players practice and perform up to standard, and together form a cohesive and balanced sound.
The main responsibilities for this role include:
Strategic and Operational Responsibilities:
• Sit as Concertmaster and Principal Musician in Firdaus Orchestra
• Perform all services comprised of, but not limited to individual rehearsals, sectional rehearsals, group rehearsals, orchestrations, recordings, media briefings, recordings and performances
• To maintain the high standard of professional playing and musical and artistic excellence required by the Orchestra
• To familiarize oneself with the relevant parts, including solos, in advance of the first rehearsal
• To continually practice their part and be prepared for every rehearsal, sectional, recording and performance
• Upkeep with individual practice and maintaining/improving skill level during non-rehearsal hours, including command over the assigned pieces for all performances
• To work alongside the conductor and provide feedback to members of the section including principals, as well as to other section leaders
• Provides leadership for musical issues of performance, specifically bowing and articulation for strings
• To oversee section musicians and mentor, support and assist in training and other aspects
• To organize and lead sectionals
• To dictate any part allocation alongside the conductor
• To be familiar with all different parts in the section in order to create a cohesive and integrated sound
• To support professionally any Leaders and Conductors engaged by the Orchestra
• To be an effective and committed team player, and to play a full role in the life of the Orchestra
• To develop collaborative relationships with musicians within the Orchestra, and specifically within your own section
• To support & develop positive working relationships with all other members of the Orchestra, the section and any freelance players engaged by the Orchestra
• To be available and ready to perform in any smaller groups or variations of the orchestra as and when required
• To manage availability for all performances
• To engage and lead in the general activities of the Orchestra, such as attendance at meetings, promotional activity, outreach and learning work, and to act as an ambassador for the Firdaus Orchestra during these activities
• To be a role model and work in accordance with the all Firdaus Orchestra policies and guidelines, including participation in Personal Development Reviews and training
• To work in accordance with the Expo City s Health and Safety guidelines and policy

Skills
15+ years of experience in playing the selected the instrument as well as:
• Qualification in music/instrument/ related area with certification/degree/diploma from a recognized institute
• Demonstrated leadership abilities
• Takes initiative and accountability
• Excellent solo and professional orchestral playing abilities
• Excellent musicianship and teaching abilities
• Excellent leadership and organizational abilities
• Knowledge of the range of orchestral repertoire
• Knowledge of varied genres
• Ability to contribute to performances that will meet the highest artistic standards
• Able to work effectively and flexibly within a diverse team environment
• Demonstrates respect for others by being fully prepared and ready to play at the start of every session
• Transparency, integrity and honesty
