Job Description

Assist in the delivery of patient care as directed by the registered nurse. Contribute to the general environment of the hospital and the well-being of the patient, families and team members as a member of the nursing team.


Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient with non-medical care and other ward-related duties as directed by and under supervision of the nurse.
  • Respond quickly to patient’s or their family’s request for assistance; keeping in mind that patient safety and satisfaction come first.
  • Attend the call bell in the department or to any other alarm in patient’s room and report to the nurse accordingly.
  • Conduct hourly patient rounding following up on patient comfort and any assistance needed.
  • Will receive non-clinical responsibilities each shift from the nurse.
  • Assist the nurse with patient’s hygiene, elimination, mobility, physical comfort, eating, and drinking needs while observing and reporting any specific changes to the licensed nurse.
  • Clean the trolleys used before and after patient care and replace all consumables used.
  • Assist the nurses to obtain patient’s height and weight measurement.
  • Effectively assist the nurses in maintaining patient’s elimination.
  • Know hospital’s approved disinfectants and their indications for usage in their department.
  • Clean biomedical equipment in accordance with NMC RH Khalifa City policy.
  • Assist in the maintenance of cleanliness in all areas including patient’s room and the nursing station; ensuring that surfaces, computers, phones, etc. are cleaned daily and regularly throughout the shift.
  • Collaborate with the housekeeping team to maintain the cleanliness of the department and the kids' play area.
  • Check at the beginning of the shift the hand sanitizers and inform housekeeping when they need to be replaced.
  • Liaise with nurses and patients in the OPD setting to support patient satisfaction, provide updates on bed availability and waiting times.
  • Replace sharp containers when 2/3 filled or when expired per hospital policy.
  • Ensure cleanliness of the soiled utility room and collaborate with the laundry department if hampers are full; maintain a record of linen (type and quantity).
  • Collect clean linen from laundry.
  • Assist in the maintenance of supply and storage areas; clean supply boxes per department routine or monthly during stock check.
  • Maintain pantry cleanliness and collaborate with nurses and dietary team to remove unnecessary trays.
  • Transport specimens to the laboratory.
  • Comply with patient confidentiality as per hospital policy.
  • Act as a messenger as required.
  • Escort stable patients in wheelchairs or assist nurses with bed transport to/from Radiology or other departments, including to/from the operating theatre.
  • Accompany discharged patients to the exit and assist them into their cars; maternity patients should be transported by wheelchair.
  • Assist nursing staff in preparing/cleaning rooms for admission/discharge and ensure necessary supplies are provided.
  • Report any lost or broken item/equipment to the nurse or in-charge when cleaning a discharged room.
  • Ensure biomedical equipment is cleaned after discharge, returned in good condition, and plugged in.
  • Arrange oxygen cylinders properly, ensure they are fixed in stands, and report empty cylinders to nurses.
  • Check all department rooms daily and complete the daily environment checklist.
  • Maintain a record for all borrowed items and follow up to ensure their return.
  • Transport instruments to CSSD for sterilization and return sterilized items to their areas after nurse item count.
  • Check monthly CSSD sets for expiry and report damaged packaging.
  • Ensure department curtains are maintained, sent for washing as per hospital policy, and maintain a record. Ensure extra curtains are available.
  • Collect general/stationery items from store and medications from pharmacy.
  • Participate in scheduled educational activities.
  • Comply with all OSH and infection control policies, standards, and procedures; cooperate with hospital management to meet requirements.
  • Work according to documented OSH procedures and specific responsibilities.
  • Be familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures.
  • Be familiar with patient safety goals related to daily activities.
  • Notify nurses of OSH hazards, incidents, near misses, or concerns.
  • Comply with waste management and transmission-based precaution policies.
  • Work with nurses to complete departmental inventories.
  • Attend applicable OSH/Infection control training programs, mock drills, and awareness programs.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Desired Candidate Profile

Qualifications

  • Some high school or equivalent.
  • Intermediate English skills preferred; spoken Arabic advantageous.
  • Demonstrated motivation to work in a healthcare environment.
