Job Description Technical Safety Specialist

Job Title: Technical Safety Specialist

Reports to: Research Safety Manager

2. Job Purpose

The technical Safety Specialist is responsible for ensuring a safe and healthy working environment by:

Conducting comprehensive risk assessments

Working with laboratory managers and facilities team

Overseeing HSE aspects of the projects

Providing expert advice

Performing regular inspections

Providing training

Ensuring compliance with local, and international regulations

The Health and Safety Specialist works closely with all departments to foster a culture of safety and health throughout the organization.

4. Key Result Areas
Regulatory Compliance

Monitor and interpret environmental, health, and safety regulations.

Conduct regular reviews and updates of safety programs to ensure they meet current regulations and industry best practices.

Collaborate with lab managers, facilities team, HSE focal points, and other stakeholders to integrate safety practices into daily operations.
Technical and Project Contribution

Leads on safety in lab designs and on modifications to existing labs.

Ensures that lab designs meet safety and building codes and practices, and that required hazard operability reviews are conducted.

Ensures that lab safety is incorporated in all aspects of building design code, exhaust systems, lab experimental equipment, biological safety levels, cleanrooms, high pressure lab experiments, toxic and flammable gases, and hazardous materials.
Risk Assessment and Management

Analyze job sites, work processes, and equipment to identify potential risks.

Perform regular and detailed risk assessments to identify potential hazards in the workplace.

Develop and implement control measures to mitigate identified risks.

Continuously monitor and review risk assessments to adapt to new hazards.
Training and Education

Design and conduct training programs on environmental, health, and safety topics.

Develop and conduct safety training programs for employees at all levels.

Create engaging and informative training materials.

Ensure all employees are aware of and understand safety policies, procedures, and emergency protocols.

Track and document employee training records.
Incident Investigation and Reporting

Promptly investigate all workplace accidents, injuries, and near-misses.

Interview affected employees and witnesses.

Prepare comprehensive incident reports.

Follow up on the implementation of corrective actions.
Inspections and Audits

Perform regular safety inspections, laboratory audits, fire risk assessment, and other inspections.

Conduct regular and thorough inspections of all facilities, equipment, and work practices.

Use checklists and tools to ensure all aspects of safety are evaluated.

Identify non-compliance issues and correct them.

Prepare detailed inspection reports.

Assist with external audits and inspections.
Emergency Preparedness

Develop and implement emergency response plans and procedures.

Coordinate regular emergency drills and training sessions.

Serve on the HSE spill response team.
Day-to-day Routine Activities

Collaborate with project teams, offering expert guidance on risk assessment and mitigation plans.

Assist the HSE Manager in implementing strategies, monitoring policies, and preparing reports.

Develop and implement policies and procedures as assigned.

Manage the development and implementation of an HSE management system based on ISO 45001 MS.

Ensure subcontractors conduct work in accordance with HSE procedures.

Inspect facilities, machinery, and safety equipment.

Perform additional duties and tasks as assigned.
Documentation and Record-Keeping

Maintain accurate and up-to-date records.

Prepare and present detailed safety reports.

Develop and distribute safety bulletins, newsletters, and communications.

Prepare reports and documentation for internal and external stakeholders.

Contribute to monthly HSE reports.

Involve in development of HSE dashboard and reporting.
