Pediatric surgery is a sub-specialization of surgery for performing procedures on fetuses, infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. Surgical interventions may be needed for the treatment of diseases, trauma or birth defects.

A pediatric surgeon is responsible for the complete surgical care of young patients, from initial diagnosis through postoperative recovery. Key duties include:

• Surgical management: Performing a wide range of elective, emergency, and complex surgical procedures on neonates, infants, and children.
• Diagnosis and evaluation: Examining patients, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, and developing surgical treatment plans.
• Consultation: Providing surgical consultations to other medical specialists, such as pediatricians, neonatologists, and emergency physicians.
• Prenatal counseling: Advising parents of fetuses diagnosed with congenital birth defects that may require surgery.
• Family communication: Guiding patients and their families through the diagnosis, treatment options, risks, and recovery process in a compassionate manner.
• Postoperative care: Monitoring patients' recovery and educating families on managing postoperative care at home.
• Collaboration: Working with multidisciplinary teams, including other surgical specialists, to coordinate patient care.
• Medical education: Supervising and mentoring medical students, residents, and surgical staff.
• Quality improvement: Participating in clinical audits, research, and peer reviews to ensure high standards of care.
