Shift Manager Job Description

Mirfa International Power & Water Company (MIPCO), Mirfa, Abu Dhabi, UAE

Purpose of the Job:

To lead the Operations Shift Team and ensure the plant safely meets availability, reliability,

efficiency, generation, and cost targets within environmental limits. The role demands

technical knowledge of CCGT and desalination technologies and enforcing safety rules,

compliance with agreements, and high-quality operations leadership.

Scope of the Job:

The Shift Manager makes key decisions impacting plant performance, with expertise in

combined cycle gas turbines, desalination plants, and auxiliary systems. They act as a Safety

Controller and subject matter expert, maintaining procedures and ensuring operational

compliance and training.

Key Accountabilities:

- Ensure safety and environmental compliance.

- Lead shift operations to optimize plant performance.

- Support governance and HR development.

- Oversee training and Emiratization.

- Ensure accurate plant monitoring, start-ups, shutdowns, and reporting.

- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders.

- Manage incident response, performance monitoring, and procedure updates.

- Contribute to budget planning and contractor performance evaluation.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

- High plant availability and efficiency.

- No reportable safety or environmental breaches.

- ISO and OSHAS certifications.

- Effective team development and training outcomes.

- Smooth plant operations with minimized downtime.

Key Relationships:

Operations Manager, Control Room Team, Maintenance, HR, HSE, External Stakeholders

(off-takers, contractors).

Knowledge and Skills:

- Strong HSE understanding and application.

- Deep technical knowledge of power and water plant operations.

- Leadership and incident management abilities.

- Communication, problem-solving, and procedure development skills.

- Familiarity with commercial and regulatory requirements.

Experience and Qualifications:

- Minimum 3 years as Shift Charge Engineer or similar role in CCGT/Desalination plant.

- Engineering degree/diploma.

- Management qualification (optional).

- Experience of the application of Plant Safety Rules and undertaken various roles such as

DP/Issuer/Safety Controller under the safety rules.
