Roles & Responsibilities

The Refrigerant Technician is responsible for the safe, compliant, and efficient handling of refrigerants within refrigeration systems. This role focuses exclusively on the recovery, charging, leak detection, troubleshooting, containment, documentation, and environmental management of refrigerants in accordance with regulatory standards. The technician ensures the integrity of refrigerant circuits across various refrigeration applications. Maintaining system performance, and ensuring regulatory compliance.


Responsibilities:

  • Refrigerant Recovery & Charging: Perform safe and compliant recovery, evacuation, and recharging of refrigerants using certified recovery equipment.
  • Leak Detection & Repairs: Conduct inspections using electronic leak detectors, UV dye, and pressure testing. Isolate and repair refrigerant leaks in accordance with EPA guidelines.
  • Refrigerant Management Compliance: Accurately log and report refrigerant usage, leaks, and recovery activities.
  • System Evacuation & Vacuum Testing: Ensure systems are properly evacuated and free of moisture or non-condensable gases before recharging.
  • Pressure Testing & Charging Calculations: Calculate proper refrigerant charge levels based on system specifications and superheat/subcooling data.
  • Cylinder Handling & Storage: Safely handle and label refrigerant cylinders. Maintain secure and compliant storage per industry standards.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Maintain detailed service records, leak test reports, and refrigerant logs as required by law and company policy.

Desired Candidate Profile

SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Good practical and creative skills.
  • Strong technical and troubleshooting skills in refrigeration and HVAC systems.
  • Proficiency in refrigerant leak detection methods, including electronic detectors, ultrasonic tools, UV dye, and pressure testing techniques.
  • Skilled in performing accurate refrigerant charging using superheat, subcooling, and manufacturer specifications.
  • Strong knowledge of refrigerant types (CFC, HCFC, HFC, HFO, natural refrigerants) and their specific handling requirements.
  • Experience using refrigerant recovery, recycling, and evacuation equipment in compliance with EPA standards.
  • Familiarity with refrigerant tracking systems and electronic logging tools for regulatory documentation.
  • Ability to interpret pressure-temperature charts and apply refrigerant cycle principles to ensure system charge accuracy.
  • Competence in identifying and correcting refrigerant containment issues, such as worn seals, loose fittings, or corroded components.
  • Knowledge of cylinder handling procedures, including proper labeling, storage, and transportation of refrigerant containers..
  • Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining zero refrigerant loss during service operations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 2-5 years of practical experience in refrigeration maintenance and repair.
  • In-depth knowledge of refrigerant types (CFCs, HCFCs, HFCs, HFOs) and their applications.
  • Proficient in refrigerant recovery/recycle equipment and leak detection tools.
  • Strong understanding of refrigerant tracking requirements.
  • Familiarity with local codes, standards, and environmental regulations related to refrigerants.
