Roles & Responsibilities

Job Purpose

The Network Cable Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of network cabling and related infrastructure. This role ensures optimal performance and connectivity across the university's network systems, including data centers and remote sites, supporting a robust IT infrastructure aligned with PMU s goals.

Duties and Responsibilities

Major Duties/ Responsibilities:

Install, terminate, and label network cables, including Cat5e, Cat6, and fiber optic cables, to support data, voice, and video systems.

Perform routine maintenance and repair of cabling infrastructure to ensure continuous connectivity and network reliability.

Assist in setting up network racks, patch panels, and cable management systems to maintain a neat and organized environment.

Conduct cable testing and diagnostics using appropriate tools to verify connectivity, identify faults, and resolve issues promptly.

Collaborate with network engineers and IT staff to troubleshoot connectivity issues and implement effective solutions.

Maintain accurate records of all cabling installations, including diagrams, labeling, and inventory management.

Ensure all work adheres to industry standards and safety protocols, maintaining a clean and secure work area.

Assist in maintaining documentation related to network layouts and cable routes within data centers and other university facilities.

Support data center cabling needs, ensuring proper organization and accessibility within racks and server cabinets.

Assist with disaster recovery (DR) preparations by maintaining and verifying network connections for backup systems and equipment.

Work with IT Infrastructure and project teams to support network expansion, upgrades, and reconfiguration projects.

Follow project timelines and contribute to achieving milestones by coordinating cabling activities.

Qualifications & Experience (Required)

  • Diploma or equivalent; additional technical certifications (e.g., BICSI Installer, Fiber Optic Technician) are preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience in network cabling installation and maintenance.
  • Familiarity with Cat5e, Cat6, and fiber optic cable standards, tools, and techniques.
  • Basic knowledge of network hardware and connectivity principles.
  • Experience working in data center environments is a plus.
  • Understanding of safety and compliance standards related to cabling and installations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Required)

Strong technical skills in cabling installation, termination, and testing.

Attention to detail and commitment to high-quality workmanship.

Ability to work independently and manage tasks within deadlines.

Good communication skills for collaborating with IT and engineering teams.

Physical ability to lift equipment, work in confined spaces, and perform cabling tasks safely.

Basic troubleshooting skills for connectivity and cable-related issues.
