Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Fleet Operations Management
    Oversee day-to-day operations of vessels within the fleet.
    Ensure compliance with flag state, class society, IMO, ISM Code, and company policies.
    Monitor vessel schedules, voyage performance, fuel consumption, and port operations.
  • Technical Management
    Plan and supervise vessel dry-docking, repairs, and routine maintenance.
    Monitor vessel performance, machinery health, and condition of equipment.
    Liaise with ship engineers, superintendents, and external contractors.
  • Crew Management
    Oversee recruitment, training, and certification of seafarers.
    Ensure compliance with STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping).
    Monitor crew welfare, rotation, and retention.
  • Safety & Compliance
    Ensure vessels adhere to international safety (SOLAS), security (ISPS), and environmental (MARPOL) regulations.
    Conduct audits, inspections, and safety drills.
    Investigate incidents/accidents and implement corrective actions.
  • Financial & Budget Control
    Prepare and manage budgets for vessel operations and maintenance.
    Monitor operating costs, fuel expenses, spare parts, and repairs.
    Negotiate with suppliers, shipyards, and service providers.
  • Reporting & Documentation
    Maintain accurate records of vessel performance, incidents, and maintenance.
    Report operational issues, technical problems, and cost variances to senior management.
    Ensure timely submission of statutory documentation.
  • Stakeholder Communication
    Liaise with charterers, port authorities, classification societies, and flag state authorities.
    Act as a point of contact between ship and shore management.

Desired Candidate Profile

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Maritime Studies, or equivalent.
  • Class 1 COC (Chief Engineer) or Master Mariner (preferred for senior positions).
  • Knowledge of ISM/ISPS/ISO standards and international maritime regulations.

Experience

  • Several years of seagoing experience as Chief Engineer, Master, or senior officer.
  • Previous experience as Technical Superintendent, Operations Manager, or similar shore-based role.
  • Experience managing multiple vessels (bulk carriers, tankers, container ships, or offshore fleet).

Skills

  • Strong knowledge of vessel operations, maintenance, and safety management.
  • Budgeting, cost control, and commercial awareness.
  • Leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management.
  • Familiarity with maritime software (Planned Maintenance System, Fleet Management tools).

Other Requirements

  • Ability to travel internationally for vessel inspections, dry docks, and audits.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
