Roles & Responsibilities

Durham School for Girls Doha is seeking an outstanding and highly committed Primary/EYFS Head of Year. The Head of Year plays a pivotal role in the effective day-to-day running of DSGD. Acting as a key link between class teachers, students, parents, and staff, the Head of Year ensures that all students in their year group are supported both academically and pastorally.This role requires outstanding communication skills, strong leadership, and the ability to manage and motivate a team of teachers with fairness and professionalism. Excellent organisational and multitasking skills are essential in order to maintain an overview of student progress, wellbeing, and behaviour across the year group. Reporting to the Head of Pastoral Care/Deputy Head (Pastoral), the Head of Year works closely with senior leaders and is supported through regular guidance, advice, and collaboration. As a middle leader, the Head of Year is expected to be an exceptional role model, demonstrating commitment to the school s values, policies, and expectations. The role demands a proactive, flexible, and team-focused approach, leading by example and contributing positively to the wider school community.

  • Lead year group meetings as required, ensuring adherence to agreed agendas and actions.

  • Lead, manage, and develop the year group team to deliver an inspiring, broad, and balanced curriculum in line with school expectations.

  • Play a leading role in ensuring the year group understands and works towards achieving targets set within the School Improvement Plan.

  • Support and challenge colleagues in addressing actions arising from school monitoring and review processes.

  • Take responsibility for the planning, organisation, and delivery of year group trips and residentials in accordance with the school s off-site visits policy.

  • Provide day-to-day guidance and support to ensure the effective organisation, timings, and smooth running of the year group.

  • Work collaboratively with other Heads of Year and middle leaders to complete delegated tasks within agreed timescales.

  • Support year group staff in managing behaviour in line with the school s behaviour, rewards, and sanctions policy, escalating issues where appropriate.

  • Monitor attendance and behaviour across the year group, ensuring timely follow-up and appropriate intervention.

  • Ensure class teachers are following up attendance concerns, making parent contact, and recording communication accurately.

  • Ensure all parental concerns and communications are logged appropriately on the Engage system.

  • Monitor and promote high-quality teaching and learning across the year group, modelling best practice through own teaching.

  • Oversee the consistency and quality of planning, marking, feedback, and learning environments across classrooms and shared areas.

  • Track pupil progress across the year group, supporting assessment moderation, data accuracy, and the implementation of effective interventions.
