Roles & Responsibilities
Responsibilities
- Assess Load Characteristics: Evaluate the weight, shape, and center of gravity of loads to determine the safest rigging and lifting methods.
- Inspect Rigging Gear: Conduct daily inspections of slings, shackles, hooks, and chains for signs of wear, damage, or corrosion, removing defective equipment from service.
- Secure Loads Properly: Attach loads securely using the appropriate slings, shackles, and hooks, ensuring they are properly rated for the load weight and type.
- Check Load Balance: Confirm that loads are balanced and stable before lifting to prevent shifting or accidents during the lift.
- Coordinate with Crane Operators: Use hand signals, radios, or other communication methods to work closely with crane operators during all phases of lifting.
- Guide Crane Movements: Steer and direct the crane during lifts, ensuring smooth, controlled movements and preventing swinging or shifting of loads.
- Follow Safety Protocols: Always wear proper PPE such as helmets, gloves, safety glasses, and fall protection gear, adhering strictly to safety standards.
- Perform Risk Assessments: Identify potential hazards before each lift by conducting thorough safety and risk assessments to prevent accidents.
- Monitor Loads During Lifts: Keep a close watch on the load during lifting and positioning, adjusting as necessary to avoid swinging, sudden shifts, or drops.
- Dismantle & Store Equipment: Carefully remove rigging gear after lifts and store all equipment properly to maintain safety and readiness for future use.
- Maintain Accurate Records: Keep detailed logs of inspection results, load weights, lift activities, and any equipment issues or incidents.
- Report Safety Concerns: Immediately notify supervisors of any unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, or near-misses to prevent accidents.
- Assist with Setup & Dismantling: Help set up rigging gear and lifting equipment at the start of shifts and dismantle everything safely at the end.
- Ensure Full Compliance: Confirm all rigging and lifting operations meet safety regulations and standards, always maintaining a safe working environment.
Qualifications
- Minimum Qualifications
- Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of a rigging or crane operation apprenticeship or technical training program
- Knowledge of rigging hardware and safety standards.
- Certifications:
- OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour Safety Certification (or equivalent)
- NCCER Certified Rigger (Level I & II preferred)
- NCCER Certified Signal Person
- First Aid and CPR certification
- Additional industry certifications may be required depending on the job.
- Experience:
- At least 3 to 5 years working in rigging and lifting operations Experience with different cranes and rigging hardware Able to read load charts and interpret technical manuals Knowledge of load weight calculations and load stability.
- Other Requirements:
- Strong focus on safety and following safety protocols.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work in physically demanding and high-risk environments.
- Flexibility to work overtime, nights, or weekends as needed
- Valid driver s license.
- Skills and Technology Used:
- Ability to interpret load charts and safety regulations.
- Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Working Conditions:
- Must be capable of working in an extreme weather conditions with temperatures exceeding 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Indoor and/or outdoor environment with very adverse and harsh conditions (i.e., hot, dry, duty, desert environment with average temperatures of 30 degrees in the winter and 130 degrees in the summer months).
- Includes some industrial production environment conditions as well.
- Physical Requirements:
- Heavy work. Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Work may require heavy lifting, stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, and working with or in areas where a potential could exist for exposure to physical, chemical, or biological agents. Employee use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required for some situations. PPE includes, but is not limited to, head, foot, torso, respiratory, vision, and hearing protective devices. Must comply with all Fire and Safety Regulations and post policies.

The Crane Rigger is responsible for safely attaching, securing, and guiding loads during lifting operations using cranes. This role requires technical knowledge of rigging hardware and safety standards. The Crane Rigger works closely with crane operators and site personnel to ensure lifts are performed safely, efficiently, and according to plan.
