Assistant Head Teaching and Learning (Primary)

The Assistant Head-Teaching and Learning (Primary) is a senior leadership position reporting directly to the Principal. The post holder will provide strategic leadership for teaching and learning across the primary phase (KG1 Grade 6), ensuring high standards of professional practice fully aligned with the Downe House ethos and expectations.

The role requires a strong understanding of children s developmental stages and learning needs across early childhood and primary years. The post holder will ensure that approaches to teaching, learning and assessment are well-sequenced, age-appropriate and impactful, while supporting both staff and students throughout the phase.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide senior leadership for teaching and learning across the primary school, ensuring high expectations and consistency from KG1 to Grade 6.
• Lead, inspire and support staff in developing excellent classroom practice rooted in strong pedagogy and professional reflection.
• Promote and model Downe House standards of excellence in teaching, learning, assessment and feedback.
• Support staff understanding of progression and transition, ensuring curriculum and pedagogical continuity across the primary years.
• Work collaboratively with senior leaders to ensure teaching and learning decisions are guided by meaningful student progress data.
• Oversee planning, curriculum implementation, lesson quality and assessment practices across the primary phase.
• Contribute to whole-school improvement, strategic planning and self-evaluation processes.
• Maintain a teaching commitment, modelling exemplary practice and professionalism.
• Foster a reflective, aspirational and supportive professional culture within the primary school.
