Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Oversee the publication schedule and assist with ongoing editorial projects while adhering to HBKU Press editorial policies and procedures that fulfill the HBKU Press mission and vision.
  • Support editorial project development in the administration of the commissioning, planning, and tracking production progress of publishing projects (includes P&L reports).
  • Evaluate incoming/submitted academic proposals (journals, books, conferences)
  • Contribute to the commercial and strategic objectives of the business through recommendations of new projects (journals, books, conferences, other products/services)
  • Provide support to HBKU Press mission to become an international research hub.
  • Serve as a communication link to build mutually beneficial relationships between HBKU Press and the academic community in Qatar and the academic community in the Middle East by building and maintaining a network of editors, authors, and other stakeholders.
  • Work with appropriate systems (e.g., BiblioCloud, Editorial Manager) to ensure inputting and updating of titles and scheduling information adhere to workflows and production timelines.
  • Report and track technical problems to the Production team and problem-solve where relevant.
  • Support planning of events related to academic outreach and business development by liaising with Communications or Marketing and suggesting sponsors where appropriate
  • Seek knowledge about scientific and digital publishing to be aware of industry trends.
  • Assist with marketing drives to generate digital content, including graphics and banners related to publication development.
  • Other reasonable tasks as assigned by the supervisor

Desired Candidate Profile

HBKU seeks applications for the position of Academic Publishing Specialist. The applicant will be responsible for proposing and developing academic products and services that best meet the needs of the market and discipline, including journals, books, and conference proceedings

  • Bachelor s degree with 6-8 years of experience in publishing or any other relevant field of study, ideally with expertise in academic publishing
  • Knowledge, skills, and experience in the field of international publishing and familiarity with its processes
  • Knowledge and experience ideally in the Scientific, Technical Medical publishing industry, or a high interest in this industry and willing to learn.
  • Knowledgeable about Open Access and scholarly journals, and academic books markets.
  • Passionate about the importance of research publishing
  • Overseeing the successful development, launch, and adoption of the products/services is a key activity therefore, considerable project management skills, good relationship building, and networking abilities are important.
  • Interest in publishing trends, including digital media and cross-platform publishing.
  • Good Arabic and English communication skills with the ability to write reports.
  • Experience of presenting to academic audiences
  • Knowledge of basic HTML/XML coding is desirable
  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to draft and edit a variety of written reports and communications and to articulate ideas clearly and concisely;
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications
